"Cult" was a
great experience and from the start. "I was determined to make a
feature film sitting in San Jose bay area", says Mahesh. Mahesh
didn't know where to start. It was a daunting experience that
the project will not come to a reality adds Mahesh. But
luckily Mahesh was introduced to IMAGE (http://www.imagesite.org)
which was a great platform to take the first step. At this
platform, Mahesh found the screenwriter Rebecca Sanders. Mahesh
adds "I am so impressed with her that I am working with
her on the next feature film." There were seven versions of it
and one fine day when Mahesh got script and I was reading it and
for the next ninety minutes I was glued to my seat and I didn't
move and I immediately called Rebecca "Becky" and I told her
that the script was done." I believe that a
screenwriter/screenplay is the blue print of a film and any film
maker shouldn't compromise it at any cost" Mahesh qoutes.
Then, came the
process of Cast and Crew selection which Mahesh had no
experience with. He quickly found out that there were many
avenues to find talent in the bay area. Mahesh says that "there
are a lot of talents in the bay area which haven't been tapped
into". He also assembled a small crew which was constantly
changing. He had go through 3 camera operators, 2 Director of
Photography, 2 gaffers and so on.. but the cast remained the
same!! Mahesh adds "it was weekends after weekends shoot and at
times it felt that the end was never there".
Once the
principle photography was complete, the challenges of editing
started. Mahesh spent grueling three months to complete the
post-production on the film. "My wife and kids would be
sleeping and he would sneak out of the bedroom and start editing
which would continue into late nights", Mahesh adds.
Then came the
most exciting part when he was finally able to premier at Camera
3 Cinemas. It was a full house showing, around 300 people showed
up for the premier! It was the most delightful and a very proud
moment for Mahesh and his entire cast and crew.
